Mike Ladd poet, performer, personality within the alternative American scene. An artist marked by war, the struggle between good and evil, he recorded The Infesticons, The Majesticons, creating along with the Harlem Stage and the Royaumont Foundation the Sleep songs project in 2011, bringing about an encounter between the nightmares of American veterans of the Iraq war and a poet heir to the grand traditions of classical Iraqi poetry… He works together with Vijay Iyer, Arto Lindsay, Marc Ribot, Seb el Zin…
› 10 actors, slammers, poets, singers
Since Homer, great western texts had been recited.
In the 20th Century less emphasis was placed on delivery. Yet by the end of that century, American poetry was challenged by non western modes of writing and performance.
Has western poetry come full circle? What can performance poets learn from resistance to oral presentation? What has the west learned from
the Oral traditions of the African diaspora, The Middle East and Asia?
Searching for the “perfect marriage” between page and performance, in music and text, where is the ideal meeting point between those realms?
In an effort to better our writing and performance, we will explore the space on the page and the silence in performance.
Using the tension between the problematic terms “slam” poetry and “academic” poetry to our advantage, we will celebrate the meeting point between Shakespeare and The Epic of Sundiata (13th Century Mali).
