Master 1 level and above
Conceived as a veritable testing ground, the Italian cantatas, duets and trios by Händel offer singers a concentrate of technical and expressive difficulties in Baroque singing.
Intended for the great early 17th century Roman performers, these miniature opera scenes and ensembles pose the thorny problem of virtuosity.
How is this music to be sung today with its formidable technical difficulty?
This training session will attempt to supply technical and stylistic answers to singers wishing to develop their aptitudes for virtuoso singing. It will also explore the connection that this vocal style maintains with theatrality and the enhancing of a text, far from the image of superficiality and flippancy that is often given to it.
The classes will be given alternately in group lessons in the form of workshops and in individual lessons.
- pronunciation of Italian as a basis for interpretation
- work on the various melismatic techniques adapted to the various types of voice.
- technical work on the differences between the melisma in the 17th century, that of the 18th century, and Rossinian melismas
- ensemble work, development of mutual listening in duet and trio contexts, workin on harmony with thoroughbass
- What is virtuosity? (Trills, melismas, leaps of intervals, articulations)
- stylistic work on early 18th century Roman music (ornamentation, improvisation)
- evolution of virtuosity in the Baroque era, in texts from Caccini, Monteverdi to Tosi, Mancini and Porpora
