› 5 improvisor musicians, professional-level singers and instrumentalists
Subramaniam is among the mythical musicians of the last thirty years. Since his The Violin of Southern India recordings he has caused the Carnatic music of Southern India to shine forth throughout the world, at once as music embodying one of the great cultures of the Indian subcontinent and as universal music, shaped by a devotional spirituality of irresistible power. His music can speak to everyone across all cultures, for Subramaniam is able to make this refined and complex language accessible to all. The border between oral tradition and writing fades, and the split between heritage and creation is done away with: Subramaniam is presence and present. Hence, through direct contact with Subramaniam this international workshop is set to delve into the keys to the esthetics of Carnatic music, and to observe how recognized musician-improvisors and creators, hailing from all esthetic horizons, can use them to nourish their own imagination and creation.
