The training programme in interpretation of the lied and art song is one of the pillars of the Royaumont Foundation’s Voice programme. Cycle 2 enables performers to affirm a personal repertory and can lead to recitals withing the context of the Saison musicale or at partner venues.

Ruben Lifschitz, pianist
At the outset a solo pianist who came to the attention of Alfred Cortot and Wilhelm Kempff, Ruben Lifschitz since 1975 has devoted himself to the accompaniment of lied and French art song. For many years, he was a song instructor at the Atelier Lyrique of the Lyon Opera, the Paris National Opera School, the Conservatory of Lausanne, as well as the National Conservatories in Lyon and Paris, and now holds interpretation sessions devoted to lied and French art song at the Royaumont Foundation. Numerous singers have worked with him at Royaumont, among them Natalie Dessay, Karine Deshayes, Stéphane Degout…
4 pianist-singer duos
Concerts at Royaumont in the framework of the 2012 Saison musicale and that of partnerships.
For the period from Friday 6 April through Friday 27 July 2012, participants have a training contract.
Beginning with the period of production, participants benefit from a limited-duration (CDD), professional engagement contract.
One must know how to sing: the recital is not a fallback for voiceless singers.
Knowing how to convey a text; the singer as well as his/her pianist must be “literary-minded,” just as passionate about the poems and languages as about the music.
The singer must be endowed with a good memory: the recital is not a reading, and it is given from memory.
The composers of song and lied were all pianists, so that many accompaniments require a very high degree of instrumental proficiency.
Once these prerequisites are met, the goal of this instruction is:
> to build together the firm foundation of basic repertory for the future;
> to discover how much the works are all unique and different and that, to bring them to life, there are neither systems, receipes nor tricks;
> to learn to place oneself at the service of the music and the poetry
> to become interpreter/performers.
The classes are mainly individual lessons (1 1/2 to 2 hours per duo and per day) alternating with time for individual practice.
Working on diction and style, on phrasing, colors and voice/piano articulations, an approach to stylistic evolution within a song, and of the song (or lied) in a cycle or ensemble.
In-depth study of the meaning of the texts (poems) making possible a better approach to the interplay of text and music, and of the direct relationship between singer and pianist.
