Working on the voice is tantamount to working on oneself, exploring one’s body, playing with the organic matter of sound. The exploration of registers and timbres within choral work will be linked with various theatrically-oriented vocal exercises.
The diversity of oral-culture musical traditions and certain 20th century texts with “phonic” intent will make up the basis of an initial slate of proposals. From Inuit throat singing to the Buddhist shômyô, from yawning to onomato-poetic improvisation, from bel canto to Pygmy yodeling…, we will make our way through the infinite variety of sounds that the human voice is able to produce. By concentrating on the kinesthesic dimension highlighting the palette of timbres, we will emphasize articulatory behavior and respiratory reflexes. By exploring the repertory of exclamations and interjections of the language we will take up the cadence an assortment of gestures and mimic devices.
Besides offering to everyone the possibility to reconnect with the one’s “vocal body”, this workshop is in a position to carry out certain modifications in articulatory and postural behavior traits, respiratory reflexes, development of expression outside of the conventional territories of language.
The first week will be devoted to instrumentation (putting breathing and internal phonatory sensitivities to use), the second to theatralisation (working out and implementation of a choreographic and vocal bearing).
Group workshop alternating with times for individual practice.
