Introduction

The goal is to participate in the discovery of works by a composer from the early Renaissance period who is highly emblematic of his time, somewhere between the tradition inherited from several centuries of musical practice and the temptation to explore freer forms in composition. Alexander Agricola has sometimes been called an avant-garde composer, off the beaten track, like Gesualdo. Improvisational practice is one of the avenues we will explore in the repertoire around Agricola. The Musica Nova ensemble, specialised in polyphonic repertoires from the end of the Middle Ages, has devoted time to the study of Agricola’s compositions, and will reveal the fruits of its research in the course of the training session.
