In slam, halfway between the verbal and the musical, the word-sound can create a meaning beyond that of the literal. This is what happens especially in the improvised slam practiced by Dgiz. Here slam joins up with vocal practices explored from other points of departure in France by sonic poetry from the 1970s, in the United States and in Great Britain by free jazz and improvised music genres. Following an initial workshop in 2008 with Dgiz and Médéric Collignon that delved into this question, there now comes a fascinating meeting between Dgiz and Phil Minton, resulting in this training/ exploratory workshop in slam, vocal gesture and improvisation. Since the 1960s Phil Minton has been involved in all the adventures concerning free vocality and improvised music genres; his training as a trumpeter yields the particular enabling him to think in terms of the verbal/musical transition. This workshop will benefit from the collaboration of Daunick Lazro, baritone saxophone, straight off the magnificent recording Alive at sonorités with Emouvance (2007).
