Pursuing the exploration of the song and consonance in contemporary music, initiated with the session on Stockhausen’s Stimmung, Voix nouvelles proposes a study workshop on the principle vocal ensemble works by Claude Vivier. A Canadian composer murdered in 1983 at 35, Vivier in the 1970s built up a hard-to-classify corpus of works foreshadowing post-modernism. Based on melody and homophonic texture, his music owes an essential debt to the Stockhausen of Stimmung and Mantra, works that the German master composed while Vivier was his pupil. As an adopted child, Vivier throughout his work sings of the nostalgia of a universal yet absent mother whose voice expresses itself via a powerfully expressive lullaby, often consonant, always respectful of natural vocality. A loner seeking to enflame the world with candid love, Vivier – particularly in Chants (1973) and the Love Songs (1977), programmed for study here, sets forth the tenderness and permanance of childhood wonder.
