The Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, a landmark work within the Neapolitan style, exerted considerable influence on the European 18th century. Composed in 1736, it yet inspired Mozart a half-century hence. In our day, from what angle should this crucial work from the Baroque repertory be approached?
Jérôme Correas has chosen to draw a parallel between the Stabat Mater of Pergolesi and that of Pasquale Caffaro, another Neapolitan musician who is very poorly known today and whose work, at a time of triumph for Classical music, offers an alternative to the model of his elder colleague, allowing us -given the same text and musical structure- to grasp how an original language has little by little been transformed, becoming the mode of expression used by all composers from the end of the 18th century.
By calling in a specialist in 17th century Neapolitan painting, an opportunity will be given to draw a parallel between two modes of expression that use the same codes, colors and forms, a valuable light to grasp all of the interpretative options within these genres of representative music.
Entirely devoted to the pictural expression of sentiments, Neapolitan music, in chiaroscuro countenance inspired of Caravaggio as is painting, may just reveal some of its secrets to us.
Study of the specificity of the Neapolitan style (vocality, harmony, ornamentation), presentation of Neapolitan painting as an aid to contextualization and interpretation (expression of the passions, rhetorics, range of colors).
Interpretative study of the theatrality of sacred music in 18th century in Napoli. Work on the duo form (Pergolesi) and on the 3 -or 5- voice ensemble (Caffaro) as to text, ensemble sound, dynamics and contrasts. Examination of the specifics of Italianate pronunciation of Latin. Study of other religious pieces by Caffaro.
Individual and group lessons with Jérôme Correas assisted by the vocal coach and Latin coach. Rehearsals with continuo, followed by the orchestra Les Paladins.
