Introduction

Stimmung is a spellbinding work, entirely written in natural harmonics (just intonation) and testifies to Stockhausen’s spiritual quest. It was composed in 1968 for six voices, and explores vocal techniques akin to diphonic song, modulating the harmonics of held notes through vowel articulation. It leaves very great width of interpretation to the singers who use “models” rather than scores. Above all it is a magical ritual in homage to the 11 divinities from various religions, emblematic of its time, the “flower-power” epoch, when mysticism expressed itself through experimentation. This work which is universally admired but rarely performed, will provide the opportunity to explore new vocal techniques, to practise as a performer, to carry out research in voice merging, under the direction of the most famous contemporary vocal ensemble that studied this piece with Stockhausen over a long period.
