Presentation

In the same way as musical research carried out on the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque or Classical eras, pieces for voice and organ from the 19th century already belong to “early music” and require a musicological and interpretational approach inquiring into the traditions passed down throughout the 20th century. Joris Verdin associated with Françoise Masset, who knows these questions of “informed” interpretation, will aim for a double goal:

› learning to sing with organ and coming to grips with the organ in order to play with singers

› studying the musical elements inherent in the mid-19th century: aspects of dynamics, phrasing and articulation, tempos, rhythm, “rubato”.

In terms of playing technique at the organ Joris Verdin and the trainees will explore the influences of piano and harmonium playing and the "style lié", within the perspective of religious ideology in the second half of the 19th century, making a distinction between church and concert music. For vocal interpretation, Françoise Masset will take on questions of textual content (the language used) and its pronunciation, of specific treatment of the voice (vocal technique, phrasing, vibrato…) and its interrelationship with the organ and in acoustics that are often reverberant.

Possibility for practice on the Cavaillé-Coll organ and a harmonium.
