The earliest notated Western Medieval polyphonic repertory – the Winchester Troper

How are these polyphonic pieces to be reconstituted via reading of the complex system of neumes in these Latin liturgical manuscripts?
Vocal technique and modal improvisation as well as musicological knowledge will make up the tools of experimentation.

Presentation

The theme of this session of instruction will take in subjects with which the Dialogos Ensemble has particular affinity: the early polyphonic repertory.
The polyphonic corpus from Winchester is among the little-known musical treasures from the Medieval West — these are the oldest polyphonic pieces to have come down to us in Latin liturgical manuscripts. Notated with a complex system of neumes that allow not a sole interpretation but rather several, these polyphonic pieces might well have been relegated to silence and oblivion due to the impossibility of providing a sole reading in modern transcription. Inquiry into their sound structure can thus only result in a hypothetical reconstruction, even with the aid of Medieval theoretical treatises. Here the work will involve two areas of study, each within its theoretical and practical aspects.

Practical instruction

This study will be carried out with Katarina Livljanic: reading of the original notation in the manuscript sources, individual vocal technique, modality, listening and interpretation of polyphonic pieces. The repertory will also be approached using techniques of improvisation in the modes.

Theoretical instruction

Susan Rankin, the foremost international specialist in this repertory, will guide us in the discovery of the sources, their notation and methods of study leading from the manuscript towards the vocal performance of these pieces of music. The Latin repertories from Winchester will be approached from the standpoint of the original notation in the manuscript sources.
