Presentation

The origins of the motets of Guillaume Dufay (ca 1400-1474) reach back to the 14th century, while setting out the basis of a new style imbued at once with the contenance angloise and Italian vocality, forging a path toward the musical Renaissance. The performer needs to return to the sources in order to make his/her own the literary text, a reflection of the era’s political and religious events, deciphering the music through mastery of 14th-century compositional techniques coming out of an epoch in which virtuosity rhymed with expression.

Theoretical instruction

Coming straight out of the session the Musica Nova Ensemble devoted to the motets of Guillaume de Machaut, this one will offer singers the opportunity to share its experience via workshops that will delve into various aspects of Dufay’s motets. Gérard Geay will guide them in their discovery of compositional techniques. Numerous publications and facsimiles, some acquired expressly for this occasion, will be available to them in the François-Lang Music Library.
