The poetry and music of Guillaume de Machaut tower over the 14thcentury in France. The noblesse of expression in his motets is equaled only by their technical perfection. Today’s performer has the duty of rediscovering the tools of the Medieval creator in order to come as close as possible to the spirit and the letter of his work. For this it is crucial to return to the sources. First of all the singer must develop personal familiarity with the text that was contemporary and has, with the passage of the centuries, slipped out of our grasp. Then he must decipher the music, mastering 14th century techniques: modality, notation, counterpoint, solmisation, musica ficta.
