Introduction

Along with the opera, religious music is an area that at the turn of the 20th century gave the greatest impets to singing and choral art. The Voix Célestes 1880-1914 workshop seeks to bring to light the most significant works of sacred inspiration, while revealing the context to which they belong. The equal-voices motet with organ constitutes an extensive repertory waiting to be rediscovered. Musicians as prestigious as d’Indy, Fauré, Ropartz owe to it a significant part of their renown, but many others (such as Bréville, Guilmant…) deserve to have their contribution to the genre recognized and highlighted. The interpretation of this French sacred music has not yet undergone significant study on the part of singers and instrumentalists (style, esthetic, spirit…): hence a reflection that echoes that of the baroqueux of thirty years ago. Emmanuel Mandrin, organist and director of Les Demoiselles de Saint-Cyr, will contribute his knowledge of the repertory of works for female voices to furthering acquaintance of  his little-known era, while meeting the demands of performance in keeping with the musical text.

Session Curiculum

Goals

to bring singers and organists into contact for an all-too-rare close collaboration
to have young performers discover an extremely rich repertory
to teach singers how to sing with an organ, as soloists or in ensembles
to familiarize organists with the duties they would have had at the time (interpretation, accompaniment, improvisation, Gregorian chant…).

Theoretical Instruction

Given by specialists in various areas, these theoretical classes allow participants to deepen their knowledge of 19th century repertories using the organ or harmonium but also the general context connected with liturgy as well as the social and artistic society of the era.

Practical Instruction

Training of singers in the practice of the repertories and the quest for novel interpretation; training of instrumentalists in the practice of the Cavaillé-Coll organ and of the harmonium, as well as in the repertories of sacred music composed for these instruments.

Method

Alternating group classes and specialized classes in small groups with time for individual practice. Group instruction will deal with theory and practice, particularly the relationship between voice and instrument (organ or harmonium).
