While the religious music produced in France after 1870 has attracted the attention of performers, this cannot be said of that written between 1830 and 1850, a period that corresponds to the activity in France of Frédéric Chopin, whose bicentennial will be celebrated in 2010. Although Chopin wrote no sacred music, he heard much of the same and was in close contact with musicians who practiced this musical style. The research group Voix célestes thus will make it possible to discover the universe of religious music in Chopin’s time with composers such as Halévy, whose Ave verum is to be found in manuscript in the François-Lang Music Library at Royaumont. But other works will be unearthed, whether in the area of vocal music or that of the organ and the harmonium, like Luigi Cherubini, Louis Dietsch and Charles Gounod.
The specific goal of this workshop is threefold:
1) Lead young performers, singers or keyboardists, to a discovery of this extremely rich repertory;
2) Teach singers performance with organ accompaniment;
3) To teach organists how to accompany in an ensemble context.
Given by specialists from various areas, the theoretical classes will afford the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the 19th century repertory featuring the organ or harmonium, but also the general context connected to the liturgy and the civil society of artists from that era.
Training of singers in the practice of the repertories and the quest for novel interpretation, reading of numerous unpublished scores, training of instrumentalists in the practice of the Cavaillé-Coll organ and the harmonium.
Alternating group classes and specialized classes in small groups with time for individual practice.
Group instruction will deal in particular with the theory and the implementing of principles of vocal/instrumental ensemble.
