7 singers (soprano, mezzo-soprano or alto, baritone, 3 tenors, bass), and 2 vocal coaches
Wozzeck, Berg’s opera premiered in 1925, is arguably the operatic work that left the strongest mark on the 20th century, as the beginnings of modernity.
The opera is adapted from Woyzeck by Büchner, a fragmentary play for which the plot sequence intended by the author is not known.
The fable is based on a humdrum event: Wozzeck, a soldier, living out of wedlock with Marie with whom he has had a child, discovers that she is being unfaithful and kills her before committing suicide.
But Wozzeck is a fairly complex character, serving as a guinea-pig for a doctor, with enigmatic visions and fits of delirium, living in a cruel world in which “superiors” crassly make fun of the poor.
Director André Engel staged Büchner’s play several years ago and at present would like to further explore Berg’s work with operatic singers.
This is an opportunity for young artists to work on a major staple of modern repertory and to perform it within exacting examination of the stage acting.
The various spaces at Royaumont Abbey will serve as a setting for this exciting itinerary.
Irène Kudela, long-standing accomplice of André Engel in Fondation Royaumont workshops, will take on the musical interpretation of this opera, leading the singers toward enhanced self-sufficiency with respect to the conducting.
In addition, this will be an opportunity for two vocal coaches to come to grips with the specificities of this work as well as to perfect their approach to coaching singers.
Ruth Orthmann who for many years has collaborated with André Engel for his stagings, will as well be German coach to see to comprehension and perfect pronunciation of the text.
Work within the spaces specially laid out within the abbey, as will as other, more unusual ones, such as the Royaumont park.
Study of the concept of role as determined by the situation
