A look back

/Home/La Fondation Royaumont/Investments : A look back

Between 1977 and 2003, the Foundation invested € 15,356,000 in the Abbey, on restoration and enhancement of the monument a well as on development and facilities. The investment program was stepped up in the 1990s. Four fifths of these investments were carried out over the last 10 years.

Exterior

the park lighting, installed in 1992, was designed by Georges Berne.

in 1996, the novices' courtyard was refurbished.

Cloister

the northern gallery and half of the western gallery were restored in 1986 and 1987. Restoration work on the eastern and southern galleries, as well as drainage and foundation reinforcement work on all four galleries, were carried out in 1996 and 1997; archaeological investigations in conjunction with these operations located the monks' lavabo. Traces of stones that were found there served as a basis for rebuilding the two networks of arcatures that can be seen today in the southern gallery.

in 1998, the passage through the fathers' building was restored and the floor was rebuilt in Saint Maximin stone.

restoration work continued on the cloister during the winter of 2003/2004; it included restoration of the terrace waterproofing and subsequent installation of balustrades identical to those that existed in the 19th century. The facade buttresses of the fathers' building and the kitchens opening onto the cloister were also repaired during the winter. The restoration of the western cloister gallery vaults was also scheduled for completion in 2004.

comprehensive restoration off the masonry, tie beams, buttresses, frame and roofs of the latrine (so-called "works") building was carried out in 1992 and 1993.

in 1993, the salle des charpentes and the salle de la poivrière were completely refurbished: radiant floor heating was installed, acoustic work was performed and lighting was installed. On the floor where the medieval latrines were originally located, transparent glass bricks were installed to show the canal that passes through the middle of the building below. Then, in 1997, new windows with double glazing and traditional glass were installed, as well as railings.

in 1994, the paddle wheel over the canal flowing through the building was restored.

in 1994, the southern gallery of the works building was re-developed into a café – tearoom and lounge, separated by a glass partition. It was designed by Thierry Deleforge.

at the end of 2003, the furniture in the lounge was replaced; it was also designed by Thierry Deleforge.

during the winter of 2003/2004, the floor of the two ground-floor galleries was restored and radiant surface heating was installed.

in 1979, "modern" kitchens were developed. They were completely renovated and upgraded in 1996.

in 1981, the four meeting rooms on the second floor were renovated; they were regularly upgraded between 1984 and 2001.

in 1995, two rooms (the Teilhard de Chardin room and the sacristy) were developed into permanent exhibition rooms for visitors to the Abbey (exhibition of religious sculpture, works from the library, videos on stone and water, etc.).

a new visitors' reception area was developed in 1995. The installation of a lift next to the central staircase is currently under consideration; the first plan goes back to 1972.

the parquet floor of the large dining room was replaced in 1995 by a slab floor made of Burgundy stone, and the lighting and paint were restored.

in 1998, building facade drainage works were carried out.

the meeting rooms were fully restored between December 2003 and March 2004: 7 rehearsal studios and work rooms were developed, as well as a salon-auditorium. Meanwhile the Saint Louis cell underwent a first "rejuvenation" program.

the southern half of the building's third floor was completely redeveloped to create an office area during the winter of 2003/2004.

Refectory and monks' kitchens

working areas had become too small, so six new offices were built in the attic of the monks' refectory in 1990, followed by two others in 2000 and 2001.

in 2001 and 2002, the refectory and kitchens were completely restored and developed under the oversight of Pierre-André Lablaude. 10,000 patterned and 30,000 plain tiles manufactured by the traditional method cover the floor. The stained glass and the reader's pulpit, the vaults and the walls, the facades and the south gable wall were restored and the entire roof was repaired. Surface radiant heating was installed in both rooms. Modular scenographic and acoustic systems were installed in the refectory, where the Music Season concerts are now held.

a Romanesque organ was ordered from Antoine Massoni in 1991. It was inaugurated in 1993. The Cavaillé-Coll organ installed in the refectory in 1937 by François Lang is being restored and will be returned to its place in the refectory at the end of 2005.
