Introduction

A monograph approach to the Italian composer Alessandro Grandi will notably be devoted to works drawn from the collection of his profane compositions published in 1637, arias and cantatas for voice, basso continuo and violin, which belong to the Royaumont Foundation’s Bibliothèque Musicale François-Lang. His compositions are characteristic of music for small instrumental and vocal ensembles that began to be widespread at the end of the 16th century. We will make a specific study of vocal virtuosity, which was to be widely developed in the course of the following century.
