Royaumont Abbey can serve as an introduction to the historical and cultural reality of the Middle Ages. Built in "the most beautiful century of the Middle Ages", the 13th century, it illustrates the power of monasteries and more particularly the Cistercian order, monastic life, Gothic art, monastic hydraulic engineering and Saint Louis, the Abbey's builder and faithful guest.
Group activities available for schoolchildren provide an enjoyable and active approach to the monument. Adventure outings use the delights of exploration to bring out children's powers of observation and ability to reason. Educational circuits have been devised in partnership with the National Education system with the help of a history teacher at Anna de Noailles middle school in Luzarches in the Val d'Oise region. There are two versions, intermediate (ages 9 – 11) and first and second form (ages 12 - 13).
Starting with the 2004 school year, a new circuit will be offered: based on observation and archive documents, it asks pupils to note the transformations the abbey has undergone in the course of its history.
Guided tours are also an excellent way to explore the abbey.
