IntroductionStudying an entire opera role, working with orchestra, experiencing the stage under professional conditions and taking part in a production that can provide a genuine professional entry to the French and European stage - these are the goals proposed by the Unité scénique. After the two versions of Finta Giardiniera by Mozart and Anfossi, Fabula di Orfeo by Poliziano, Cadmus et Hermione by Lully, the Unité scénique will begin work on a new repertoire, a new lyrical genre. In Le Médecin malgré lui, Charles Gounod gave French comic opera one of its most inventive and attractive scores. The originality of the work is revealed in its subtitle: “A comedy by Moliere arranged into a comic opera by Messrs. Jules Barbier and Michel Carré”. In other words, it is Moliere who remains master of the game. The convention of alternating songs with spoken text, particular to the comic opera genre, is perfectly in its place here. Therefore training will stress dramatic and theatrical technique as much as singing technique. It will be rounded out by a study of the melodies of Gounod, thus strengthening the student’s knowledge of specific aspects of French song.
