Introduction

The stage director is the kingpin in this training session, which looks into the sometimes complex relationship between theatrical gesture and song, or the practical theatrical aspects of the sung gesture, depending on the repertoire. The study, undertaken with young singers is for the purpose of initiating them or allowing them to perfect their work in stage practice from a more theatrical angle, including role-building and preparation of the character as well as an understanding of the actor’s vocabulary and practices. The work, as its name Il Trittico shows, is a triptych made up of three works lasting 50 to 60 minutes each. They can be put on separately but when taken together give the history of Italian musical theatre from Commedia dell’arte to opera and melodrama. The training session will allow the singers to take play various roles in various situations, sometimes extremely different from each other. Specific work on Gianni Schicchi, the third part of the triptych, will be presented to the public as long extracts.
