Introduction

Opus 112 is one of Schumann’s later works. It is related closely to another project which never saw the light of day, an oratorio devoted to Luther. This work is out of the ordinary in that it combines oratorios, lieder and opera. The simple storyline, drawn from a fairytale written by the poet Moritz Horn, is transformed by the music into an allegory, in the manner of the Scenes of Faust. We will work on the version accompanied by piano. Studying this composition provides an opportunity to approach all of Schumann’s solo voice repertoire forms: from the aria with small ensemble to the choral form.
