The cloister

/Home/Abbey/Monument/visit : The cloister

Lying at the heart of the Abbey, it is one of the largest Cistercian cloisters.

The gallery along the monks' building to the east was entirely destroyed at the time the cotton mill was built and then rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. A comparison with the gallery along the walls of the church gives an idea of the quality of the restoration work carried out since the last century.

The French garden with its pool was designed by Achille Duchêne and dates back to the early 20th century. Originally, a lavabo (a small Gothic building housing a basin into which drinking water flowed) stood opposite the refectory. The lean-to roof which covered the cloister galleries has also disappeared.
