The kitchens

/Home/Abbey/Monument/visit : The kitchens

Since the kitchens were rebuilt a number of times, it is difficult to gain a clear picture of what they were like originally. Near the door the serving hatch is visible through which dishes were passed and which was the only connection with the refectory in the 13th century. The fireplace is assumed to have stood between the four columns.

The massive architecture and simple decorations, which are repeated in other rooms devoted to the everyday life of the abbey, contrasts with the lightness and airiness of the areas such as the church and the refectory devoted to meditation and prayer.

In this room is exhibited the Virgin of Royaumont, an important exemplar of late 14th century Parisian sculpture, which probably came from a royal workshop.
