Presentation

A shimmering ballet of bodies and hearts in love, carried by the beauty of the music, Antonio Sartorio’sOrfeo alternates sensual, pathetic, comic and tragic atmospheres.
Taking the opposite view of Monteverdi, the composer presents us with a possessive and distrustful Orpheus, who doubts the love of a Eurydice struggling to keep her love and her life. It is herself who returns as a ghost to ask Orpheus to deliver her from the Underworld.
Fifteen years after Stefano Landi’s Il sant’Alessio, this fascinating production celebrates the reunion of director Benjamin Lazar and Philippe Jaroussky. Following them, they take the spectator into the garden of Orpheus’ madness, those intermediate spaces between life and death, past and present, where Orpheus and Eurydice never stop looking for each other and eternally lose themselves.

Biographies

Philippe Jaroussky conductor
* 1999 : training session and concert Sedecia, re di Gerusalemme, by Alessandro Scarlatti, under the direction of Gérard Lesne 2014 : Verlaine recital with the Ebene quartet and Jérôme Ducros.

Philippe Jaroussky began singing with Nicole Fallien at the age of 18 after studying the violin and piano. In 1999, he performed the role of Ismaële in Sedecia, re di Gerusalemme, by Alessandro Scarlatti, at Royaumont, under the direction of Gérard Lesne, which was soon recorded by Virgin. A voice is born. He is the lyrical revelation of the Victoires de la musique in 2004 and lyrical artist of the year 2010. Philippe Jaroussky’s repertoire covers all the styles of the Baroque: Monteverdi, Rossi, Haendel, Vivaldi…
Countertenor Philippe Jaroussky has conquered a prominent place in the international musical landscape, as confirmed by the Victoires de la Musique awards (Revelation Lyric Artist of the Year in 2004, then Lyric Artist of the Year in 2007 and 2010) and, recently, by the prestigious Echo Klassik Awards in Germany, at the 2016 ceremony in Berlin (Singer of the Year, a title he had already won in 2008).
With a technical mastery that allows him the most daring nuances and the most perilous pyrotechnics, Philippe Jaroussky has invested an extremely wide repertoire in the Baroque domain, from the refinements of the Italian Seicento with composers such as Monteverdi, Sances or Rossi to the dizzying virtuosity of Handel or other Vivaldi. A tireless discoverer of scores, he has brilliantly contributed to bringing to light the music of composers such as Caldara, Porpora, Steffani, Telemann or Antonio Sartorio.
In 2002, Philippe founded the Artaserse Ensemble, which performs throughout Europe.
Philippe Jaroussky has just completed a project that is particularly dear to his heart: the Académie Philippe Jaroussky. This institution aims to democratize access to classical music by welcoming young people who are culturally isolated through original, sustained and demanding teaching. The Academy is located in La Seine Musicale on the Ile Seguin, in Boulogne-Billancourt.

Born in 1977, Benjamin Lazar studied baroque declamation and gesture with Eugène Green from the age of eleven. He also practices violin at the Schola Cantorum and singing with Dominique Moaty. A graduate of the Claude Mathieu acting school and the Minsk Academy of Arts, he works with musical ensembles such as the Simphonie du Marais, with whom he created three shows on Bensérade, Racine and Molière and recorded Lully’s Le Ballet de Flore. Assistant to Michel Didym on Le Langue à Langue des Chiens de Roche by Daniel Danis at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier and Les animaux ne savent pas qu’ils vont mourir by Pierre Desproges at the Théâtre de la Ville (2004), he directed the show Il Fasolo (2002) for the baroque ensemble Le Poème Harmonique and, as part of the Académie Bach d’Arcques-la-Bataille, L’autre Monde ou les Estats et Empires de la Lune (The Other World or the Estates and Empires of the Moon) by Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac. The creation of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme in 2004 in a comedy-ballet version, unanimously acclaimed by the critics, established him as one of the great architects of the revival of Baroque performance in France.
