Gretel et Hansel Humperdinck and Pinocchio Menozzi

Faculty

Sarah Koné

Sarah Koné joined the Lyon Opera Maîtrise in 1996 under Claire Gibault. For ten years she was a part of exciting summer drama projects with Les Allumeurs de Lune, an unusual theatre company launched by Raymond Dupuis. She also writes plays and poetry. It was a desire to combine the arts of singing, dance and drama within the public sector and for otherwise untrained young people that prompted her to set up a Youth Company in 2008. In 2016 this little company joined the emblematic Opéra Comique, where together they founded the latter’s Maîtrise Populaire.

Presentation

Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Menozzi’s Pinocchio
Children on the stage : discovering the central role of the body in children’s singing through work on two operas for young voices.
The eight conductors selected for this course will look at how to work with children and their voices in stage repertoire, using a new teaching method developed within the Maîtrise Populaire. This method uses a universal musical language based upon the children’s perception and their active participation in the creative process, making the learning process easier.

The course will provide a chance for theoretical work on two operas for young voices and a multidisciplinary approach : dancer and choreographer Christine Bonneton will lead an initiation into dance and movement ; and there will be advanced work on conducting with members of the Maîtrise Populaire and répétiteur Katia Weimann.
