Ensemble Ulysses

Ulysses travelled the whole of the Mediterranean; it is Europe that the young musicians of the Ulysses ensemble are crossing. These 8 hand-picked performers – who together cover almost the entire spectrum of a large orchestra, from trumpet to piano or clarinet to cello – are invited to travel by the European Union’s Creative Europe program. Their first stop is in Milan, the last one at the Royaumont Abbey, where they will be conducted by Jean-Philippe Wurtz, conductor and artistic director of the Foundation’s Musical Creation Center. Their concert will be an opportunity to revel in the great diversity of the music of our century, between a piece by Hugues Dufourt that will soon be a classic, a more recent work by New Yorker Alex Mincek, and the unveiling of a brand new score by Turkish Senay Uğurlu.

Jean-Philippe Wurtz studied at the Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg, then at the Musikhochschule of Karlsruhe and received advice from Ernest Bour. He also studies at the International Eötvös Institute. In 1998 he founded the ensemble Linea, dedicated to creation. His career as a conductor led him to conduct numerous orchestras, mainly in France and Germany. A performer committed to creation, he has given more than three hundred premieres by composers from all over the world. Today, he is the artistic director of the Pôle Création musicale at the Fondation Royaumont.
