Presentation

Paul-Antoine Bénos countertenor
Sarah Ristorcelli piano

Both instinctive and intimate, brilliant and discreet, Federico Mompou’s music does not always receive the honors it deserves on this side of the Pyrenees. Was it the effect of the composer’s shyness, which had led him, for example, in 1911, to run away from the Paris Conservatory before having to present himself? Or the history of his native country, Spain, which experienced long dark hours in the twentieth century?
Countertenor Paul-Antoine Bénos brings the Catalan composer back into the limelight with a performance of his Combat del somni (” Fight of the Dream “), composed between 1942 and 1948 to poems by Josep Janés. Accompanied by the pianist Sarah Ristorcelli, he continues his journey in Spain with Isaac Albéniz, the composer of Asturias, a favorite theme of many guitarists, and Joaquín Turina, author of several operas. The journey ends in the French Basque Country, with a nod to Maurice Ravel. Chosen by Bertrand Cuiller to interpret Handel’s Rinaldo , and highly acclaimed alongside the Consort in Purcell’s repertoire(O solitude, performed at the 2020 Royaumont Festival, available online), Paul-Antoine Bénos easily leads the audience down paths where he was less expected.
